Um 1898 kaufte der Fassmaler Christian Delago ein Haus unterhalb der Kunstschule, richtete dort mit seiner Frau Josefina Schmalzl ein Kaffeehaus ein und baute es bis 1906 zum „Dolomitenhotel Madonna“ aus. Auch seine Werkstatt übersiedelte Delago hierher. Damit gab es neben 25 Zimmern, Garten und Veranda auch ein Malatelier für die Gäste.

1908 wurde im Hotel als erster im Tal der Dolomitenalpenskiclub Ladinia gegründet, 1927 der Hockey-Club Gröden. Sein heutiges Aussehen verdankt das Hotel Um- und Ausbauten in den 1950ern und 1990ern.

The development of Gröden all began with the Ustaria dl Baga, now the Grödnerhof. In 1911, sculptor Ferdinand Perathoner (dl Baga) built a villa complete with workshop on one of the meadows of the Vidlonch farm and, just two years later, added a coffee house for aristocratic spa guests.

In the early 1920s, the Demetz-Bernardi family purchased the property and, in the years to follow, the neighbouring “Schattenheim.” The buildings were united, and, over the years, the modest guesthouse transformed to become the five-star Relais & Châteaux Hotel.
