"Great is the power of memory that dwells in places." (from Cicero)

Lenten cloths of St. Jakob

The only Lenten cloth in South Tyrol used to cover the altar during Lent. The story of salvation is told in 24 pictures: from Christ's suffering to the Ascension and Whitsun. The spaces are ordered into four rows; the scenes teem with figures. The cloth painted with tempera on primed canvas was in use in St. Jakob's chapel until 1950, painter unknown.

Baroque Adoration nativity scene

The carved, painted, and gilded nativity scene of the Adoration of Jesus by the three kings was displayed during Christmas in St. Jacob's Church. A sculptor from the workshop of Kassian Melchior Vinazer carved it around 1760. In addition to Mary with the Christ child, the scene includes Joseph, Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. The representation of Balthazar as African emerged in Bohemia during the late Middle Ages and became popular throughout Europe.

Margaret of Antioch with dragon

The figure of St Margaret of Antioch with a dragon was probably created around 1700 by a sculptor from the Trebinger workshop. It would have featured as part of a small family altar in the parish church of St Christina. During the neoclassical period, the multicoloured, partially gilded wooden sculpture was painted white to give the impression of marble. Only during cleaning in the 1990s did its original appearance re-emerge.

Mëune

The sacristan's house (Mëune) beneath Saint Jacob's chapel is an impressive detached farmhouse dating back to 1453, in its original form and still owned by the church. The stonewalled living quarters with a cellar and two upper floors are housed in the easter part of the house, while the barn and 'palancin' balcony run around the west side. The supporting beam of the barn door features two painted black snakes facing each other as symbol of the various transformatory processes occurring throughout the year.

Trëbe

The small farmhouse with late-gothic plastering and red quoins goes back to the 14th/15th century. Brothers Christian, Bartholomäus, Dominik and Anton Trebinger are called after their birthplace, Trëbe. They made their name in the 17th century with works for churches in South Tyrol and as pioneers of training sculptors and altar building. There is still a sculpture workshop on the ground floor of Trëbe today.

Peza

The origin twin farmhouse goes back to 1249 according to dendrochronological investigations. The core section has a walled base, cellar access in the east and an overhanging wooden upper floor, called 'piguel' in Val Gardena. The listed building is divided down the middle according to the roof ridge line and has been uninhabited for a while but is still run as a farm. The western half of the building was bought by Ortisei council as an example of architecturally interesting heritage.

Col de Flam Dessot

The core of this detached farm with living and farm quarters under one roof dates back to 1554. The inside of the listed farm building was converted a few years ago. The farm name is from the pre-Romanesque place name of Col de Flam, which is linked to a 'La Tène' period cult site ('place with priests', 'place of invocation'), attested to by archaeological finds in Museum Gherdëina.

Saint Jacob's church

Saint Jacob's church is assumed to be the oldest church in the valley and is thought to have been built by the lords of Stetteneck around 1200. It was first mentioned in records in 1246. The dedication of the church to Saint Jacob, guardian of travellers, is due to the fact that it lies on Troi Paian trade route. The church is equipped with local baroque sculptures, with the originals being stored in the museum.
