Millstone from a rotary quern made from porphyry
Grinding grain in the Iron Age
This revolving millstone was found during excavation work for a private house in St. Ulrich and dates back to the early Iron Age. This type of millstone follows on from the earlier hopper and lever type and therefore has the same function as the typical Mediterranean millstone. However, it has side grooves for inserting wooden levers, which made turning the stones a lot easier.
