Latène Age hand-operated quern, 4th to 2nd century B.C.

Handle-operated quern made from porphyry

Mediterranean millstone for grain

This typical Mediterranean millstone made from local porphyry dates back to pre-Roman times and was found in various pieces at Col de Flam. Small quantities of grain (barley, oats) were shaken through the hole and milled when coming into contact with a flat, fixed lower stone. The upper stone was turned with a wooden handle, while the lower stone has not been preserved.
